Hi my name is Kaitlin and I’m addicted to shopping!! But with a smaller budget for “nonsense” (as my husband and I so lovingly call it), it’s important to try and shop a little smarter. So how do I feed my shopping addiction, purchase cute clothes that I love, and stay on budget? Here are some of my tips!
Tip #1: Shop Sales and Clearance
The number one tip is obviously, shop sales! And always make sure to swing by the clearance section. I am notorious for finding cute things at Target and waiting for them to go on sale. Without fail, they always do and I end up getting them for at least half off. The trick is to just spend loads and loads of time at Target! LOL. When shopping in a clearance section, keep in mind that you should only buy things because you love them and will wear them, not just because they’re on sale. It’s so easy to think you need something just because it’s cheap! I can assure you, that item will probably get tucked away in your closet and not worn as much as you think. Buy items you’re excited about, whether that’s on sale or not!
I also recommend shopping seasonal and holiday sales, like when Old Navy is entirely half off for Black Friday or Target apparel is 30% off for memorial day. Keep these sales on your radar and if you were already needing or wanting something from these places, buy it then!
Tip #2: Shop Exchange and Thrift Stores
Some of my favorite pieces have come from a local store called Freestyle Clothing Exchange. If you’re not local to the Sacramento area, it’s similar to a Crossroads or Buffalo Exchange. It’s a Buy, Sell, Trade store where people sell their gently used items to the store and can either get cash or store credit. This makes it kind of like a high end and ultra curated thrift store. It’s a nice way to shop for second hand items if Goodwill freaks you out. Places like this have great name brand items (sometimes with the tags still on) at a fraction of the price! I got these pants there for $15. They’re in super great condition and best of all? They’re Zara!
Thrift stores are also great, honestly. You just have to be in the mood to hunt! Either way, you’re sure to find something fabulous and unique.
Tip #3: Out With the Old, In with the New!
If you can find a Buy Sell Trade store where you live, it’s a great way to clear out your closet and get some new items you’ll love in the process! I used to work at Freestyle and honestly, I switched out most of my wardrobe monthly. Just bring your items to sell and get some store credit! If you don’t have a store like this near you, I would definitely recommend an app like Poshmark, where you can sell your clothes and make a bit of extra cash to buy more!
Tip #4: Buy Basics
My last tip is to buy basics! They stretch your wardrobe so much farther. It’s great to have versatile pieces that you can wear in many different ways and settings instead of just one extremely specific way. You’ll get more wear out of them! I love a good basic and I love finding fun basics that have just a little bit of something extra going on. Like these ruffled sleeves! This top is also from Zara and I am in love with it.
To round out my inexpensive outfit, these Old Navy boots were an after Christmas sale and they pair so well with literally everything. This hat is from Ross and my necklace is from Forever 21! I know my bag is Kate Spade and that doesn’t necessarily fit with the rest of this, but it’s okay to splurge every now and then too. 🙂 Here’s a little bit more about my Kate Spade bag and why I love it so much: Kate Spade bag.
- Bring items that are old and worn to H&M to get a 15% off your entire purchase coupon.
- Use Target’s Cartwheel app for extra sales! Or get a Target RedCard.
- Shop discount stores like Ross and Marshall’s! Some of my favorite items have come from these stores.
I know these “tips” are probably all pretty obvious, but it’s always nice to have a little refresher! Are you feeling inspired to shop or clean out your wardrobe? I know I am! Where is your favorite place to shop? Let me know in the comments below!
Until Next Time,
