My Favorite Blazers + Tips for Layering

With highs in the 50s and 60s nearly everyday, it hardly feels like winter here in the Sacramento area. But that hasn’t stopped me from incorporating some of my absolute favorite layering pieces into my looks! If you know me, you know I love a good blazer. They’re easy to dress up or down and always a great way to finish an outfit. Today’s post is all about some of my favorites that I’ve been wearing non stop lately!

STYLE TIP: Have you ever heard of the rule of three when it comes to fashion? This is the principal that adding a third item to a look makes it more interesting and put together! When getting dressed, do you usually just go for a bottom and a top? These items count as one and two but three can be anything from a heavy layer to an accessory! (Shoes don’t count.) If you’re looking for ways to up your outfit game in the new year or you just want to be a little more stylish everyday, then this easy trick is ideal. Before you head out the door, remember to grab just one more piece (or more!) to complete your look.

Layered Look #1: A Not So Basic Black Blazer

A black blazer is definitely a wardrobe staple that everyone should have in their closet! It’s a great finishing touch that definitely adds a bit of style to any outfit. Perfect for anything from brunch with the girls to that job interview you need to nail! The best part about a black blazer is that, like a little black dress, the options are endless! It’s the perfect opportunity to find something unique to you that really shows off your personal style and taste.

I came across this blazer at Ross and immediately knew I had to have it! I was obsessed with it the second I saw it. Fun sleeves like flutter and bell sleeves have been having a moment and I am so here for it. I love that this piece not only has the ruffled bell sleeve but also a peplum hem! It takes something as simple as a black blazer and gives it some fun detailing that makes it unique.

Something to keep in mind when layering is always proportion. Each piece, whether fitted or loose, has to have the right proportion to compliment the other. This particular jacket needs tighter fitting shirts in just the right length. I was so happy to find a bunch of tees that fit the bill in the basics section at H&M! My closet now has some in my favorite rich colors, like this burgundy and an olive green, as well as some black and white stripe options! No look for me is complete without one of my favorite pairs of jeans and this pair, like all of them, is from Target! These studded booties are from Nordstrom and the necklace is Forever 21.

Look #2: The Sleeveless Blazer

When looking for layering pieces, don’t be afraid to try something you’ve never tried before! For example, I was never quite convinced that I liked the look of “vests” on me until I found this sleeveless blazer from Forever 21. I just had to find the perfect piece! It’s been a surprisingly great addition to my wardrobe that pairs well with lots of things already in my closet, which is what any good layering piece should do.

Since this blazer is sleeveless, I decided to play around with it by pairing with an open shouldered top as well. If you’re just as obsessed with this trend as I am, make sure to read the Cold Shoulder Trend Talk! This look is one of my favorites because I love how all the neutral colors pair so well together.

This is actually my rule of fifths look! Like I said, don’t be afraid to add more accessories to really up your look! These jeans are, of course, from Target. The booties are from Forever 21, the necklace is vintage, and this hat is from Charlotte Russe! (When in doubt, it’s usually my go-to third piece.)

Look #3: The Neutral Blazer

This last blazer is one of my work go-to’s! It’s great because it can easily be layered with tighter fitting tops or looser fitting ones without looking weirdly proportioned. I love to pair the more neutral tan with louder prints like this leopard top!

Since this look is otherwise pretty neutral, I opted for another piece and added this skinny scarf in a rich olive green. If you haven’t caught on by now, I’m definitely a fan of a layer as well as a necklace or scarf as a finishing touch!

These are the same jeans I was wearing in my last outfit because I  love them! You know when you find something that just works and you need one in every color? Yeah, that’s the Mossimo jeans from Target for me! The blazer is from Ross again, the top is from an exchange store, and the scarf is from Forever 21. Lastly, these H&M booties finish the look strong by adding another neutral!
